Egypt Launches Sports Genome Phase in DNA Project

egypt launches dna program to boost athlete performance and health

Egypt has officially commenced the next phase of its National Genome Project, which focuses on athletes in order to enhance both athletics through DNA science and sports performance, as well as public health. This new phase called the “Sports Genome” phase was announced during an event attended by health, youth and sport, and higher education’s high-ranking representatives.

Health Minister Khaled Abdel Ghaffar said they can provide very exact training plans for athletes and assist in preventing injuries and help determine early signs of future health problems, all through understanding athletes’ genetic make-up.

Youth and sports minister Ashraf Sobhy also said that understanding an athlete’s DNA will assist youth athletes in harnessing their full potential by basing training on their DNA. Higher education minister Ayman Ashour stated that the government has given an investment commitment of EGP 2 billion, funding what he called a first for Africa and the Middle East. The Sports Genome Project is a component of the wider National Genome Initiative, and seeks to create a genetic database that can assist in early intervention in disease, and promote better healthcare in the country. Experts have asserted that the DNA project’s findings will help optimise both medical interventions as well as athletic training, and make both specific to each and every individual in Egypt.
