Egypt has officially launched 5G services from the iconic Pyramids site, which is a significant part of Egypt’s digital future. The launch was conducted by Minister of Communications and Information Technology Amr Talaat, who stated that the launch was an indication of Egypt’s strong ambition to keep pace with global technological advancement. He explained that Egypt was one of the first Arab countries to join the International Telecommunication Union, and Egypt is now proceeding with the establishment of full telecommunications coverage throughout the nation, including rural areas through the Decent Life project.

There are close to 120 million mobile subscriptions in Egypt, which is growing at 10 percent—far above the global average of 2.5 percent. Talaat noted that the freelance economy has proliferated, with over 500,000 Egyptians now working on freelance jobs, compared to only about 50,000 just a short time ago.

The CEO of Telecom Egypt, Mohamed Nasr, said his company is investing LE35 billion this year, including acquiring its 5G license, in digital infrastructure that will contribute to the development of smart cities.

Other telecom executives shared similar optimism. Orange Egypt’s Yasser Shaker stated that launching 5G at the Pyramids seals Egypt’s ancient past with its digital future. Vodafone Egypt chief executive Mohamed Abdallah said he saw great potential in education, healthcare, and economic growth from 5G. Hazem Metwally, chief executive of e& Egypt, indicated 5G could lead to artificial intelligence, the Internet of Things, and augmented reality, all conducive to achieving Egypt’s technology objectives.
