End Israeli Occupation of Palestine: Mahmoud Abbas

Israel and the US have very different plans for Gaza and Palestine post war. And Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas reaffirmed his position for a two-state solution based on international legitimacy resolutions. This means Palestine will assume full responsibility over Gaza and the West Bank.

But Israel has ruled out any role for the Palestinian Authority in Gaza and West Bank. Top US officials said they will not allow Israel to reoccupy Gaza or shrink its already small territory. The US has thrown its weight for the return of the internationally recognized Palestinian Authority.

Israel President Benjamin Netanyahu said the Israeli military would retain open-ended security control over the Gaza Strip after the war ends, meaning an extended Israeli occupation. He said there would be no foreign peacekeepers and Israel arm would ensure that the territory remains demilitarized. Netanyahu doesn’t trust Abbas. “As long as I’m in this chair, a Palestinian Authority that supports terrorism and incites terrorism will not rule in Gaza.”

Strengthening Palestine Through PA

Philip Gordon, the White House envoy, who was in Ramallah on Wednesday said the Palestinian people must have a meaningful political horizon. He told Israel that the US wants to have a plan for Gaza’s future to avoid allowing Hamas to come back to life.

Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas said the Palestinian Authority will not allow the forced displacement of the Palestinian people to take place, whether in the Gaza Strip or the West Bank, including Jerusalem. He urged the US to intervene to prevent the attacks, murders, demolition of homes, and displacement of the Palestinian population carried out by the Israeli occupation authorities and terrorist colonists in the West Bank, Jerusalem, and the Jordan Valley areas.

The US is looking at strengthening the Palestinian Authority as Israel has been ruling it out. “Nobody thinks the Palestinian Authority in its current state could run Gaza and provide security, but nobody sees at the moment any alternative to a Palestinian leadership in Gaza after the war. We think, we need to strengthen the Palestinian Authority so that it could govern Gaza.”

Ending Israeli Occupation

Countries in the Middle East and around the world are calling to an end to Israeli occupation of Palestine 1948. The Gulf Cooperation Council condemned Israel’s ongoing military actions in Gaza. The member countries said Israel’s actions were in clear violation of international law and the international humanitarian law. They warned that if the war continued there was a danger of the conflict expanding to other regions in the Middle East.

The US also doesn’t support Israeli reoccupation and occupation of Palestine, and had been working for a two-state solution to normalize relations between Israel and Saudi Arabia.
