Gaza Faces Food Crisis: Only Six Days of Flour Left in Gaza
According to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA), Gaza stands on the verge of a catastrophic food crisis with only six days worth of flour left to distribute. A rapidly declining humanitarian situation with reduced aid deliveries and increasing food shortages worsens this situation.
As stated by Sam Rose, a UNRWA official several bakeries receiving support from the World Food Programme (WFP) have described shortages of supplies and closed down resulting in larger crowds at the functioning bakeries. The current crisis has been the longest since the conflict began in October 2023 without an aid supply entering Gaza.
Israel’s choice in early March to prohibit goods from entering the territory has intensified the crisis and increased food and fuel prices. Meal rationing is becoming commonplace and humanitarian organizations alert that Gaza’s food insecurity is nearing catastrophic levels and urgently calls for immediate action.
