Gaza Faces Serious Food Crisis with Canned Food as Aid Rooting in Border

Palestinians in Gaza are struggling to survive on canned food as fresh produce rots at border crossings due to an Israeli blockade imposed on March 18. Tom Fletcher, UN relief chief, warned that food, medicine and vital supplies remain stuck, violating humanitarian law.

The UN’s World Food Programme reports it has only 5,700 tonnes of food left, enough for two weeks. Food prices have skyrocketed. Wheat flour now costs $50 per bag, a 400% increase.

Since March, Israel has barred aid entry, demanding Hamas agree to extend the January ceasefire. Hamas rejected calls for asking Israeli soldiers to withdraw. Close to 900 Palestinians have died meanwhile after Israel renewed assault on March 18 taking the tally to over 50,000 since October 7 when an attack on Israel by Hamas had resulted in the death of 1,139 individuals.

While Gaza remains besieged, civilians go without food as the markets are nearly devoid and people cannot buy new food.
