Geopolitical Tensions Threaten Undersea Infrastructure, Shipping, and Oil Rigs: WTW Report
A recent report from WTW highlights increasing risks to underwater infrastructure, shipping, and oil and gas rigs. WTW said the increased global tensions in Ukraine, the Middle East are the reasons why it is becoming unsafe and risky.
The report of WTW explains that Russia and Ukraine are using advanced weapons and they are ignoring international maritime laws. This is making sea travel and offshore operations more dangerous.
The Political Risk Index of WTW is focused on “gray zone aggression.” It means countries use different ways to weaken other nations without pulling them into a full-scale war.
Countries destroy infrastructure, cyberattacks, support violent groups, and economic sanctions on other countries. The reports show that these types of actions are increasing, partly due to countries with smaller military budgets using these tactics.
Specific Risks Highlighted in Research
Risk Area | Details |
Marine Assets | Russia’s “shadow fleet” used for oil exports poses risks due to a lack of insurance and maintenance. |
Insurance Impact | Attacks can make insurers stop covering risks, causing shipment delays and rerouting. |
Aerospace Threats | GPS jamming and spoofing are increasing threats to the aviation sector. |
Samuel Wilkin from WTW talked about the importance of understanding these risks. He said this is important then only you can think about the maritime safety!
