Iran Launches 6 New AI Projects to Help Solve Energy Crisis

Iran has announced six new working artificial intelligence (AI) megaprojects to resolve an ongoing growing energy imbalance. Spearheaded by the Information Technology Organization of Iran, the six megaprojects aim to introduce AI-enabled and improve outdated energy systems.
At a recent forum at Iran’s Space Research Institute, technology expert Mirali Seyedi emphasized the need for advanced technologies to combat energy waste and mismanagement. Although he mentioned that Iran has professional talent and related infrastructure, in a global digital access comparison Iran was still rated last.
The goals of the six new projects centered around AI include the implementation of smart energy management systems capable of identifying energy lock-in, and consequently wasting an excessive amount of energy, especially in the industrial sector. Seyedi believes these new technologies will provide the potential to intervene and solve 15-25% of the national energy problem.
He also encouraged more collaboration between ministries and the contribution of AI know-how from knowledge-based companies. The ultimate goal still is digital governance and modern energy management.
Iran is still dealing with persistent gas shortages and frequent power cuts, which it attributes to outdated systems, and the limited ability to leverage foreign direct investment. Through these six designated AI megaprojects, the Iranian government hopes to to stem energy waste, but also set in motion advancements to modernize a long-term large-scale program.
