Iran Foreign Minister Visiting China: Can Beijing Provide Iran with a Way out of the War?

Iranian foreign minister Abbas Araghchi made a trip to Beijing on September 16 for discussions with China’s foreign minister, Wang Yi, amid growing pressure on Tehran and Washington to resume diplomatic contacts over the Iran war.

China is among the most important economic partners of Iran and its significant buyer of oil. That means that China has a very direct economic interest in the situation being over and shipping in the Strait of Hormuz restored to normal.
On top of that, keeping communication with China provides Iran with an opportunity to contact the significant diplomatic player that condemned the attacks on its sovereignty and demanded negotiations.
What China Has Offered
China made a public position of itself as a proponent of dialogue but not a mediator.
According to Wang, continuation of the conflict between Iran and the United States is not in the interests of either side or the whole international community. Both sides were encouraged to resume negotiations within the framework of Islamabad and hold meaningful consultations on their issues.
The opening of Hormuz has become increasingly crucial in the Chinese approach to this situation. The strait is essential for world energy shipments, and the ongoing blockage has affected the cost of oil and world supply chains.
Why China Cannot Play a Crucial Role in This Situation
China has a good incentive to encourage peace in the region, but there are also good reasons why it should avoid taking responsibility for its resolution.
China has close economic connections with both Gulf countries and the US. It is also dependent on the Middle East for its energy supplies. A tougher attitude would make this task harder while increasing geopolitical risk for China.
Therefore, China focused on encouraging moderation, supporting talks, and communicating with Tehran without criticizing Washington or forcing any side.
It is an important nuance. One can act as a diplomatic mediator without having enough power to force two conflicting parties to come to an agreement.
