Italy Pledges Support for Lebanon-Israel Ceasefire Through UNIFIL

According to IANS, the Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Affairs Minister of Italy, Antonio Tajani said that Italy will continue to support the implementation of peace between Lebanon and Israel through its membership of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL). Speaking with the newly elected President of Lebanon Joseph Aoun in Beirut, Tajani underlined that the election of a president for Lebanon country is a significant step towards stabilizing the region and developing relations between Italy and Lebanon.

The statement was made in the context of existing unrest since Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati appealed to end the breaches of the ceasefire accord and stop targeting southern communities in Israel. When meeting US envoy Amos Hochstein, Mikati insisted on the establishment of a definite timeline for the total pullout of the Israeli troops from Lebanon within 60 days. Hochstein said that the withdrawal process will go on until every Israeli soldier leaves Lebanon territory.

The president-elect Aoun, a former army chief of Lebanon who was elected on Thursday, thanked Italy for the support that has been provided through UNIFIL and offered his vision for the rebirth of Lebanon. He reassured the country’s stand on creating security in the south and stepping up interactions with European and Mediterranean nations after the formation of the next government.
