Jordan’s Foreign Minister Set for Historic Visit to Meet Syria’s New Leader
Jordan’s Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi is expected in Damascus this Monday for a groundbreaking meeting with Syria’s new president Ahmed Al-Sharaa. It comes in the wake of a major Jordanian endorsed Arab League, Turkish, European Union and American envoys meeting in Amman earlier this month where participants focused on the post-Assad Syria. Al-Sharaa, whose Hayat Tahrir Al-Sham (HTS) group masterminded the successful attack on Assad on 8\12, has been busy reaching out to regional dignitaries.
The Jordanian government spokesman Mohamed Momani affirmed the kingdom’s stance on supporting the process of the brotherly Syrian people and their wish to achieve stability in the country.
The diplomatic mission does come at the time when Syrian refugees start their return from Jordan, more than 7,000 of them. Jordan, which hosts about 1.3 million Syrian refugees now, has an interest in seeing stability in Syria as the safety of its borders and the region depend on it. According to the UN, there are officially 680,000 registered Syrian refugees in Jordan.
