Kuwait is teaming up with the World Health Organization to combat the growing threat of antimicrobial resistance through a new partnership based on research skills. The partners of this initiative are WHO, the Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research, and the Ministry of Health based on mutual interests to enhance public health policies and scientific research at the national level.

A planning meeting in Kuwait City was the first established before a MoU signed in January 2025 about the partnership to enhance research about public health issues, AMR, pollution and preparedness for pandemics.

The Acting Director General of KISR, Dr Faisal Al-Humaidan said the risk of AMR is a threat to the healthcare system in a country, the economy and public health. He said the partnership would help in converting research into policies. He also highlighted the participation of the Ministry of Health, especially Dr Al-Munther Al-Hasawi and the AMR Unit. Dr Abdullah Al-Enezi at KISR said a scientific basis is key to developing effective strategies to combat AMR. He thanked the Kuwait Foundation for the Advancement of Sciences for its support.

Dr. Assad Hafeez, the WHO representative, spoke of the “One Health” framework which recognizes the health of humans, animals, and the environment as interconnected. Dr. Hafeez confirmed WHO’s willingness and full support for Kuwait and the collaborative effort against this global health threat.

Organizations including Kuwait University, the Environment Public Authority, and the Public Authority for Food and Nutrition participated in the meeting. All discussed research priorities and potential ways to bridge to policy, demonstrating Kuwait’s commitment to take action now against this emerging health threat globally.
