The Egyptian government has officially opened a significant eco-tourism project in the village of El-Gharqana, located in the Nabq Protected Area of Sharm el-Sheikh. The project is a part of the “Green Sharm” initiative spearheaded by the United Nations Development Programme, which aims to help position Sharm el-Sheikh as a leading sustainable tourism destination in line with the country’s commitments to the 2030 Agenda on Sustainable Development.

The project was inaugurated by Minister of Environment Yasmine Fouad, accompanied by South Sinai Governor Major General Khaled Mubarak, the new UNDP Resident Representative, Alessandro Fracassetti, and several other important stakeholders.

In her remarks, Minister Fouad emphasized how the project represents a decisive moment in Egypt’s green journey, and it aims to create formal eco-tourism opportunities for local Bedouin people, while also conserving natural resources. In the village, we will not use words like “traditional” when describing places, but will instead focus on eco-architecture and construction methods relevant and useful for Bedouin communities and for the environment.

In his attendance, Governor Mubarak expressed his final remarks by commending the effort and development as an example of strong development of eco-tourism that respects people and the planet. He also applauded the UNDP for providing support to this vision of sustainable development.

The opening ceremony included a tour of the newly constructed housing units, a handicraft workshop, and office space for a local NGO. Participants also had an opportunity to view a video documentary about the journey to date, including a panel discussion focused on the future of eco-tourism in Egypt.
