Libya Summons US Diplomat Over Donald Trump Libya Remarks
The Libyan government has formally protested against the United States for campaigning rhetoric in the run up to the upcoming election. Libya summons US diplomat to formally protest recent Donald Trump Libya remarks at political rally in Georgia on Libya issue.
Official statements say that officials in Tripoli handed the U.S. chargé d’affaires a letter of protest.
Trump has strongly attacked US Senator Jon Ossoff in his immigration proposal in his Saturday rally. The bill would “allow migrants from terror-infested countries such as Libya, Yemen, Haiti and Somalia,” Trump said. He is also said to have uttered a “very salty” expletive about the countries, echoing his use of such terms during his first term in office, a handful of news outlets reported.
The Libya Foreign Ministry vehemently denied the description. The ministry said in a public statement that it will reject any remarks that “Discount the dignity of the Libyan people and reduce their international recognition”, Business Insider Africa reports.
In addition, there was serious objections by Libyan officials on dragging their country into the US domestic electoral dispute and calculating the internal politics.
Rival Administrations Unite Against Donald Trump Libya Remarks
The foreign affair has brought a rare unity of politics to the divided North African country. The comments were strongly condemned by the internationally recognized Government of National Unity (GNU) in the capital of Tripoli and a parallel government in the east of the country.
A strong statement from the House of Representatives’ Foreign Affairs Committee, which is based in Benghazi. They affirmed Libya is “a sovereign state with ancient history and rich cultural heritage that cannot be summarized in words of a fleeting moment or preconceived judgment”.
The Hammad government in the East took it a step further, which was reported by Alwasat, and officially called for a formal and clear apology from Trump. Military officials, such as the interim leader of the Misurata-based Libyan National Defence Forces (LND) General Khaled Al-Mehsi, also denied the claims, stressing that the dignity of a nation is more important than any political argument in Libya.
Truth Social Response and the Immigration Debate – Libya Summons US Diplomat
The diplomatic fallout emerged as a controversy that spread across the globe, and late Sunday night, Trump got in touch with his own followers on the Truth Social app to discuss the matter.
Al Arabiya English reports that Trump tried to explain his stance saying the U.S. will continue to maintain its relations with Libya. He called the Libyans “proud, resilient, hospitable, deserving of peace and prosperity.
But Trump has not apologized for his comments at the rally. Instead, he switched back to his key campaign talking point: Border security. We respect the Libyan people and the sacrifices made by courageous Libyans in their fight against ISIS, the common enemy of both peoples, but Libya must not be a transit point for illegal migration and this needs to stop now, he wrote.
The geopolitical tensions that burst on the pages of the American campaign news today reveal the impact of American campaign rhetoric around the world. Libya has called U.S. diplomat personnel to its capital to officially record their complaints, and the common anger that spanned the nation means these comments by Donald Trump will be a major diplomatic flash point in the coming days.
