Maine and Colorado Ban Donald Trump 2024 Presidential Run

Two American states, Maine and Colorado, have banned former US President Donald Trump from running for top office in the 2024 election. Both states ruled that Trump is not eligible to run for president because of the 14th Amendment to the US Constitution.

It contains a disqualification clause, banning anyone who has participated in a rebellion or insurrection. As such, Trump has been red flagged for his actions leading up to the US Capitol riot in 2021.

Secretary of State Shenna Bellows, official in Maine, said some citizens had challenged Trump’s eligibility by claiming that he had incited an insurrection and was thus barred from seeking the presidency again under the 14th Amendment of the Constitution.

She highlighted that no secretary of state that has ever deprived a presidential candidate of ballot access based on Section 3 of the 14th Amendment. “I am also mindful, however, that no presidential candidate has ever before engaged in insurrection.”

Maine and Colorado Ban Could Affect Joe Biden

Florida governor Ron DeSantis believes the two states’ ruling opens up Pandora’s Box. He said Republican secretaries of state could try to disqualify President Joe Biden over the issue of migrants at the southern border.

“I don’t think that this ultimately will be legally sustained by the US Supreme Court. But I do think that this is going to be a constant throughout the election year, where there’s going to be different parts of these legal cases that are going to be front and centre.”

Trump’s campaign spokesman Steven Cheung called Bellows’ decision a hyper-partisan Biden-supporting Democrat and alleged that she was engaging in election interference. He said the campaign will quickly file a legal objection in state court to prevent this atrocities decision in Maine from taking effect.

“We are witnessing, in real-time, the attempted theft of an election and the disenfranchisement of the American voter. Make no mistake, these partisan election interference efforts are a hostile assault on American democracy.”

Other States Working to Ban Donald Trump 2024

Other states are also looking at barring the former president from running for the US 2024 presidential election. Minnesota and Michigan have ruled that election officials cannot prevent the Republican Party from including Trump on their primary poll ballots.

The Michigan Supreme Court said political parties should be able to determine which candidates are eligible to run for president. The state of Oregon is also expected to make a decision. It had previously declined to remove Trump in response to an earlier challenge. Shirley Weber, the Secretary of State in California, is inclined to keep Trump on the ballot based on the state’s law.
