Egyptian club Pyramids FC is on the verge of making history, preparing to host the South African giants Mamelodi Sundowns on the decisive second leg in the CAF Champions League final, which is to be held at Cairo’s 30 June Stadium this Sunday. Coach Krunoslav Jurcic made an intense call to Egyptian fans to fill the stadium, albeit with a sparse crowd rare for the traditional powerhouses of Al Ahly and Zamalek. The Croatian labelled such support as crucial in that this team is playing for Egypt at the continental level.

The stage now stands perfectly set by the cool stalemate last weekend at Pretoria, where Walid el Karti’s last-minute goal with just 37 seconds remaining had done much to elevate the Pyramids from outright underdogs to slight favorites. Sundowns went ahead in that period early in the second half through Lucas Ribeiro before the late interventions. With this away-goals rule still in effect in Africa, the Pyramids just need that 0-0 draw to take hold of their first-ever continental crown. A 1-1 tie will call for penalty kicks, while any scoring draw will benefit the South Africans.

Founded as Al Assiouty in 2008, the transformation of such a club since the Gulf money has been nothing short of spectacular. This move to Cairo in 2018, coupled with the concomitant financial blowout, allowed them to form a respectable team with Egyptian talent and a sprinkling of international stars such as Fiston Mayele from DR Congo.
