russia and egypt advance discussions on strategic lng terminal projects

Anton Alikhanov, Russian Industry and Trade Minister, has confirmed that there are active negotiations between Russia and Egypt on the topic of the development of liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminals in Egypt. This announcement has occurred after a high-level Russian-Egyptian intergovernmental commission meeting.

The infrastructure projects would enhance energy relations between the two countries, and new avenues for natural gas processing and distribution in the area may be developed. Alikhanov is sure that discussions have come out of initial stages where actual project work is already in progress.

We are studying a number of proposals of LNG terminal construction in Egypt”, said Alikhanov at his press briefing. ”These facilities would greatly increase the capacity for Egypt to process and distribute the natural gas resources”.

Although the exact details are still vague, industry analysts believe that the partnership could present great economic benefits for both countries. Geographically, being situated at the cross-roads between Europe, Africa and the Asian tiger economies, Egypt is a good strategic energy distribution and export center.

The announcement is made at a time that the world energy dynamics are changing, with nations looking to diversify their energy partners and supply chains. More details of the figures to be invested, time for construction and mode of operation details are expected to be released as negotiations progress.
