Kuwait Oil Tanker Company (KOTC) has launched solar energy facilities at its liquefied natural gas (LNG) filling stations in Umm Al-Aish and Shuaiba. The solar plants have a total capacity of 4.05 megawatts.

At the launch of the two solar power plants, Acting CEO Sheikh Khaled Ahmad Al-Malik Al-Sabah stated that KOTC is the first company within the oil sector in Kuwait to potentially launch such a strategic solar energy initiative. The purpose of the initiative is to operate both LNG stations entirely on solar power, signifying a vital transition towards not solely energy self-sufficiency but sustainable and environmental responsibility.

While speaking at the launch, Sheikh Khaled explained that the solar plants are part of a bigger vision to achieve a decreased reliance on Kuwait’s national electricity grid, reduce operational costs, and significantly reduce the company’s cost of carbon emissions. This initiative is also in line with the national goals of Kuwait to achieve carbon neutrality and reduce the amount of green gas emissions.

The CEO also praised the technical group for their hard work with the project, underlining the value of using local talent to move forward with renewable energy initiatives.

The project is part of a larger commitment on Kuwait’s part to clean energy and will help pave the way for others to move forward with green transitions in the energy sector in the Gulf.
