Strong Tibet earthquake 2025 kills nearly 100 people
On Tuesday, a 7.1 magnitude earthquake rattled the northern foothills of the Himalayas near one of Tibet’s holiest cities, killing at least 95 people and shaking scores of buildings in neighbouring countries such as Nepal, Bhutan and India.
The earthquake hit at 9:05 am local time. Its epicenter is located in Tingri, at a depth of 10 km. Nearly 130 people also sustained injuries on the Tibetan side, according to local media. There are no reports of fatalities in other countries.
Tuesday’s epicenter is located around 80 km north of Mount Everest. Tibet, Nepal and northern India are frequently hit by earthquakes of different magnitudes caused by the collision of the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates.
The impact of the earthquake has been felt across Tibet’s Shigatse region, home to 800,000 people. The place is administered by Shigatse city, the traditional seat of the Panchen Lama, considered one of the most important figures in Tibetan Buddhism.
