Sudan’s Military Strengthens Hold Over Khartoum with Major Seizures Including Central Bank

The Sudanese military has made considerable progress in its fight against the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) capturing important sites in central Khartoum including the central bank. This comes after the army had already recaptured Khartoum’s presidential palace on Friday.

Army spokesperson Nabil Abdallah confirmed that army forces killed hundreds of RSF fighters attempting to escape and secured numerous government and finance buildings. RSF fighters had used some of Al Mogran‘s high rise buildings as sniper positions looking down at areas of strategic importance. In retaliation, RSF used a deadly drone strike that killed three journalists and left several army personnel dead as well.

The fight for dominance in Khartoum’s central district represents a critical juncture in Sudan’s destructive two-year war that has left tens of thousands dead and more than 12 million people uprooted from their homes. With the army in control of the east and north while RSF controls Darfur and south Sudan, the struggle for power continues and the war’s “new” continued impacts cannot be ignored.
