Syria’s Coastal Mass Killings: What Happened and What We Know So Far

‘Latakia and Tartus’ Syria’s coastal provinces saw one of the deadliest mass killing violence since the toppling of Bashar Al-Assad. Reports speak of at least 973 Alawite civilians with many women and children killed by security men and pro government fighters.

Starting March 6th the violence against the rockets has aroused worldwide condemnation with demands for accountability issued by the United Nations and other global powers.

The mass killings began amid clashes between Syria’s new security forces and pro-Assad gunmen following the arrest of a wanted individual in an Alawite-majority village.  As fighting escalated, security forces carried out “sweeping operations” in Tartus while pro-Assad factions launched retaliatory attacks. The total death toll has surpassed 1,300 including 231 security personnel and 250 pro-Assad fighters.

An independent committee has been put together to investigate the acts of brutality and interim President Ahmed Al-Sharaa has said that those responsible would be held accountable. The Syrian Democratic Forces have accused Turkish-backed factions of being behind the acts of violence which further complicate the situation.
