U.S. House Panel Probes Saudi Business With Kushner’s Firm


Saudi arabia Saudi arabiaA U.S. House of Representatives committee on Thursday announced a probe into a $2 billion investment by the government of Saudi Arabia into a private investment firm managed by Jared Kushner, the son-in-law of former US President Donald Trump.

The House Committee on Oversight and Reform said that it was investigating the Saudi Arabian government’s investment. Representative Carolyn Maloney, the chairwoman of the House panel, said in a letter, “The committee is investigating the whole matter. The committee is probing whether Kushner improperly used his influence as a government official to secure the investment.”

Maloney sent the letter to Kushner. She reportedly wrote the 8-page letter. Maloney asked him to send legal documents related to the investment in the firm. Maloney also asked him to send documents dating back to January 2017, when he first assumed the role of senior adviser to Trump.

Saudi Arabia’s investment in Kushner’s firm

The investment was made from the Saudi Public Investment Fund (PIF), controlled by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, into Kushner’s investment firm A Fin Management, LLC.

According to the House Panel, Kushner secured the investment despite objections from the fund’s advisers about the merits of the deal. Experts had raised concerns about the Saudi fund’s investment in Kushner’s firm.

Maloney accuses Kushner

Maloney also accused Kushner in the letter that he was the crown prince’s “most important defender” in the White House after Journalist Jamal Khashoggi’s murder in 2018. Donald Trump’s administration downplayed the Saudi government’s role in his murder.

The journalist used to criticise the policies of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, the son of King Salman and Saudi Arabia’s de facto ruler.
