South China Sea

China ChinaTaiwan isn’t backing from the offensive as it is determined to protect its democracy. The frequent violations by China into their territory has been infuriating. So, war clouds could start to appear above the South China Sea.

US has been supportive of its military and trade partner and does not intend to change its stance about the situation either. While the US House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi is to visit Taiwan, China wants to threat with war as it continues to believe Taiwan to be a part of its territory.

America has been a long-standing ally for Taiwan and its president Tsai Ing-wen. Serious consequences were said to be on the anvil if Pelosi decides to visit Taiwan this time. But there isn’t going to be an act of war, is what most political analysts believe.

The frequency of violation is so much that on an average 2-3 territorial violations by China are reported every week. So, when American President Joe Biden warned China that it is “Flirting with Dagger” by flying its warplanes close to Taiwan, Chinese Defence Minister General Wei Fenghe replied at “Shangri-La-Dialogue” in Singapore by saying that “if anyone dares to secede Taiwan from China, we will not hesitate to fight. We will fight at all costs and we will fight to the very end. This is the only choice for China”

While China might threat war, it cannot afford to go into one. US also does not want to invest into another Afghanistan kind of situation. In Joe Biden’s administration, muscle flexing has been kept minimal. The skirmish between Taiwan and China have been continuing for decades.

Tensions between the People’s Republic of China (PRC) and the Republic of China (ROC) or Taiwan caused an armed conflict over various strategic islands in the Taiwan Strait in the 1950s. On two separate occasions during the 1950s, the PRC bombed islands controlled by the ROC. The ROC was then helped by the USA. Even now, China is trying to annex ROC that has gradually established itself as an independent economy.
