Russia and China chose to remain silent on Biden’s US presidential victory

On Saturday, as Joe Biden was announced the next US president, greetings and congratulations poured from world leaders, but Russia, China, and a few nations chose to remain silent, including some of President Trump’s long-term partners.
Prior to the US elections, Russian President Vladimir Putin stated that Moscow would work with whoever wins the elections yet there has been no official statement from the Kremlin about Biden’s success. All through his term, Trump has been blamed for being friendly towards Putin, whom he has called “a firm leader,” regardless of controversial intelligence reports that pointed fingers at Russia for meddling in the 2016 presidential race.
In comparison to Trump, Biden has been tougher on the stance on Russia, considering it the greatest threat to the U.S. national security, a month ago. Russia’s opposition leader Alexei Navalny was the primary prominent Russian political figure to openly toll in on the U.S. polls, praised, and congratulated Biden on his success.
On Sunday, Leonid Slutsky, the top of the foreign relations council in the Russian parliament, or Duma, told the state media news agency Tass that Biden was “probably not going to make positive changes with Washington’s policy towards Russia,” since Slutsky had participated in the launch of anti-Russian sanctions during his term as VP.
China had stated that it doesn’t engage in the issues of other nations, while President Xi Jinping also didn’t convey any official welcome or congratulations to the new US president. China’s relations with the U.S. worsened significantly under the Trump regime, over Covid pandemic, technology, trade, and growing human rights issues.
Brazil’s President, Jair Bolsonaro, who is frequently alluded to as “the Trump of the Tropics,” has remained quite over Biden’s triumph. So far there has been no official statement from Brazil government on Biden’s win. Bolsonaro had strongly stood in support for Trump during the presidential race and called Biden’s remarks on the Amazon rainforest, ‘disastrous’.
On Sunday, the Turkish President Recep Erdoğan also hadn’t released any public statement after Biden’s victory as the new US president. Making no notice of the U.S. election, Turkey’s Foreign Ministry complimented the victor of presidential elections in Guinea.
According to the Guardian, Turkey could lose more than most other nations from Biden’s success, as he is considered to toughen the U.S. stance against Turkey’s foreign military interventions, and its closer proximity with Russia is observed. However, Turkish Vice President Fuat Oktay stressed on Sunday that Biden’s victory would not change relations between the old allies.
A few weeks back Iran’s president, Hassan Rouhani, stated that whoever wins the US elections doesn’t concern Tehran. “For us, the United States government policies are important and not who wins the US elections,” Rouhani asserted in a cabinet meeting. After Biden’s win, Rouhani stated that he will wait and observe what Biden does prior to deciding if there is any contrast between him and Trump.
Iran’s foreign minister, Javad Zarif, said Washington’s actions will matter most than words. On Saturday, the preeminent pioneer, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, taunted the US elections, saying it was “a case of a shocking and ugly reality of liberal democracy”, which has indicated the “clear civil, political, and moral dissolution of the US administration”.
The prime minister of Israel Benjamin Netanyahu, a close ally of Trump, sent Biden his greetings without naming him president-elect, however, Israel will require support concerning the US continual pressure on Iran. Biden will surely need to balance the time he devotes to foreign policy, battling the Covid-19 crisis and the falling economy.
