Alexandria Gets New Metro Cars Made in Egypt

An important agreement was signed in Alexandria, which signifies a major step towards localization in Egypt’s public transport sector. The agreement contemplates the delivery of 21 metro train units (189 cars) for the Alexandria metro system.
This localization project is an element of phase 1 of the Alexandria Metro and will have an overall line length of 21.7 kilometers. It will run from the Abu Qir Railway Station to Misr Station. The project aligns perfectly with the aim of the Egyptian Ministry of Transport to establish a sustainable, green, and environmentally friendly mass transit system in Alexandria. The launch of the localization project demonstrates the government’s ambition to localize industries, expand domestic production capabilities, and assist the country in decreasing its foreign exchange bill for imports.
The metro train units will be manufactured at the National Egyptian Railway Industries Company. This exemplifies the government’s logical strategy to localize metro trains and all kinds of railway rolling stock. The Ministry of Transport is in close cooperation with South Korea in partnership with NERIC to establish a dedicated metro train production factory.
This is based on earlier projects, including a contract with the National Authority for Tunnels to supply 40 metro trains (320 cars) to the Greater Cairo Metro’s second and third lines, and a factory under construction at East Port Said.
