Egypt Showcases New Oil & Gas Licensing Opportunities at AEW 2025

Egypt is gearing up for a huge upstream expansion beginning with the announcement of new oil and gas licensing opportunities at African Energy Week (AEW) 2025 set to take place between September 29 – October 3 in Cape Town, South Africa. The country will be represented by Karim Badawi, Egypt’s Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources who will discuss key licensing rounds that will make a profound impact upon its future energy landscape.
New Licensing Round Aims to Boost Exploration
Egypt’s most recent licensing round which began in March 2025 includes 13 onshore and offshore blocks: seven undeveloped fields in the Mediterranean Sea, three offshore blocks in the Gulf of Suez and three onshore areas in the Western Desert. The round stems from the successful close of a 12 block round in February 2025 and fits within Egypt’s plans to drill 586 wells by 2030 and maintain Egypt’s competitiveness as an upstream player.
The round is part of a larger initiative to attract foreign investment, supported by recent agreements with Lukoil, ExxonMobil and Eni. ExxonMobil and Eni have also moved ahead with drilling at the Zohr gas field and North Marakia Offshore Concession.
Expanding Export Capacity and Regional Role
Egypt is also working on infrastructure to enhance energy exports. In the Port of Sumed, there will be two Floating Storage and Regasification Units (FSRUs) one will be the Hoegh Evi to expand regasification capacity. Chevron is also planning a seabed survey to connect Cyprus’ Aphrodite field to the processing facilities in Egypt to develop Egypt into a regional gas hub.
At AEW 2025, Minister Badawi will explain how Egypt’s licensing policy ensures both regional integration and long term energy security. AEW is the premier platform for investment and energy transactions in Africa.
