Egypt Secures Funding for 300 MWh Energy Storage Project

egypt closes 300 mwh bess project with ifc support

Egypt has successfully secured funding for its first standalone Battery Energy Storage System. The Kom Ombo storage facility will support an existing 500 MW solar photovoltaic power plant, which was inaugurated in December 2024. The BESS will have a total storage capacity of 300 MWh and will be started in July 2025. This landmark renewables project is funded by $72 million from the International Finance Corporation. The Kom Ombo BESS is led by AMEA Power, an important player in the clean energy transition in the region. The battery is expected to supply about 100,000 MWh annually to the grid, avoiding almost 20,000 tonnes of carbon emissions annually.

The project is part of Egypt’s comprehensive 4 GW Emergency Renewable Energy Programme, which aims to contribute to the ongoing growing electricity demand and annual reductions in natural gas consumption. The BESS will enhance the security of the grid by charging from solar energy when generation exceeds demand during the daytime and discharging during times of greater demand.

With strong government support and international collaboration, Egypt is firmly on the path to a cleaner and more resilient energy future.
