France Strengthens Security Ties with Morocco as Algeria Relations Deteriorate

Bruno Retailleau went to Rabat on Monday to meet with Moroccan Minister Abdelouafi Laftit about security concerns. The French diplomatic mission travels to Morocco at this moment because their Arab neighbors continue to adjust their foreign relations in separate paths.

According to the French interior ministry, the discussions will concentrate on:

– Migration cooperation and border control

– Joint efforts against organized crime networks

– Combating drug trafficking across Mediterranean routes

France and Morocco restored diplomatic relations after Paris accepted Moroccan control over Western Sahara starting summer of 2024. The policymakers have restored the partnership between these nations following their past political disagreements on immigration matters.

When France accepted Moroccan authority over Western Sahara it greatly worsened relations with Algeria which backs Polisario Front’s drive for independence. On Monday Algeria made its worst diplomatic decision by ordering 12 French officials to depart the country in just two days.

Secretary of Foreign Affairs Jean-Noel Barrot justified the French personnel removal through the arrests of three Algerian citizens. Barrot made an urgent request to Algerian authorities to stop their forced removal actions. Our response will begin without delay if Algeria keeps its decision to expel our government officials.
