Iran has recently conducted missile attacks in Iraq and Syria. The main target in Iraq was in Erbil, the capital of the Kurdish region. Here, Iran claims it attacked a place used by Israeli spies and groups against Iran.

This attack caused the death of four civilians, including a well-known businessman, Peshraw Dizayee. The United States, which has its consulate near the attack site in Erbil, condemned these strikes as dangerous and destabilizing for Iraq.

In Syria, Iran aimed its missiles at areas linked to the Islamic State (IS). Iran says this was in retaliation for attacks by terrorist groups that had killed Iranians in the cities of Kerman and Rask.

Notably, a suicide bombing in Kerman during a memorial for General Qasem Soleimani of Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps killed about 90 people. IS claimed responsibility for this attack.

The attack including 2 explosions occurred near the burial site of Qasem Soleimani, a military commander killed in 2020, in Kerman, Iran.

The explosions, which occurred on the fourth anniversary of Soleimani’s death, resulted in over 100 deaths and injuries. Iran’s President, Ebrahim Raisi, believed Israel was responsible and warned them of severe consequences. Experts and a US official believed that it looked like a terrorist attack, similar to previous attacks by ISIS.

The Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), Iran’s elite military force, carried out these missile strikes. They said the Erbil strike was to destroy headquarters used for spying and planning attacks against Iran.

The IRGC also mentioned an earlier incident in December where an attack on a police station in Rask, Iran, killed several officers.

The situation in the region is tense. Iran’s actions are seen as a direct response to threats and attacks it has faced. However, these strikes have increased concerns about wider conflict in the Middle East.

The region is already stressed due to the ongoing war between Israel and Hamas, with Iran-backed groups in various countries being involved.
