Israel-Hamas Truce Breaks as Airstrikes Kill Over 400 in Gaza

Israel bombed Gaza Tuesday, killing at least 404 Palestinians and breaking a ceasefire that lasted since January. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ordered the attacks after Hamas rejected changes to the ceasefire deal. Following evacuation orders for various zones, the Israeli army has signalled that the operation will broaden, raising worries of fresh ground operations.
The White House stated that it was consulted on actions taken by Israel and supports them blaming Hamas for the breakdown of the ceasefire. At the same time, Netanyahu’s choice has thrown politics into chaos with families of Israeli hostages accusing the government of choosing war over negotiations. Hamas representatives denounced the attacks designating them a ‘death sentence’ for the hostages who survived.
The assaults took place in Ramadan, raising fears of more violence. Entire families were killed in the worst hit regions including Rafah and Khan Younis. More than 560 injured people are currently overwhelming hospitals. The violence that started on October 7th 2023 and has left 48,000 dead Palestinians so far. As diplomatic efforts stall, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu faces rising domestic pressure including mass protests and political instability raising doubts over the war’s future.
