Israel to Maintain Control of Gaza-Egypt Border Crossing During Ceasefire
During the starting period of its peace deal with Hamas, Israel plans to oversee security at the Rafah border between Egypt and Gaza Strip. Officials from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu‘s office denied statements that indicated Palestinians would run the border checkpoint in a statement on Wednesday. European Union observers run the border operations and Israeli soldiers defend the facility boundary area.
The truce stands at its fourth day with officials planning to keep the peace for another six weeks. As part of the ceasefire deal Hamas will free 33 hostages and then Israel will free Palestinian detainees.
Hamas’s October 7, 2023 attack on Israel killed 1,200 people and captured about 250 hostages before turning into a large-scale conflict. Gaza local health authorities report that 47,000 Palestinians died including more than half who were children and women. According to data from Israel the country destroyed 17,000 militant fighters but no proof exists to back these numbers.
