Morocco Approves $32.5 Billion Green Hydrogen Investment to Boost Renewable Energy Goals
The Moroccan government board approved 319 billion dirhams ($32.5 billion) worth of green hydrogen projects on Thursday to make ammonia, steel, and industrial fuel. The program takes Morocco past its next renewable energy milestone by making it a top exporter to Europe from renewable sources.
The committee selected Ortus from the United States and Acciona from Spain along with Nordex from Germany to produce green ammonia through international energy projects. The selectees included joint ventures between Taqa of the UAE and Cepsa of Spain along with projects by Saudi Arabia’s Acwa Power plus two additional Chinese companies and Nareva of Morocco. Morocco provides project developers with up to 30,000 hectares of land during the initial agreement signing.
Under Morocco’s domestic and international power plans the green hydrogen system based on renewable energy stands as its main energy source and export target. The country is preparing to supply green hydrogen to the European Union because they require 10 million tons of renewable hydrogen by 2030 under their Green Deal program. Beforehand Morocco revealed its plan to give 300,000 hectares to renewable power ventures alongside its objective to raise renewable energy production to 52% of total capacity by 2030 from the existing 45%.
