Morocco is investing immensely to prepare for the FIFA World Cup 2030. North Africa will be lit up with a renewed main airport as the country plans to spend $4.2 billion (38 billion dirham) to upgrade its airports in the next five years. It is a mega-airport construction that has portrayed that Morocco is determined to host the World Cup together with Spain and Portugal.

The Moroccan government agreed to a key contract with ONDA, the Moroccan body controlling airports of the country on Thursday. The contract will revolutionize the aviation industry in Morocco and raise its tourism business.

The 4.2 billion dollar airport infrastructure solution shall be shared into two broad areas. The expansion of the airports will be funded by the government using a sum of 2.8 billion (25 billion dirhams). The additional 1.4 billion dollars (13 billion dirhams) will be used in maintenance activities and the acquisition of lands.

Morocco targets doubling its airport capacity in the number of passengers to over 80 million by the year 2030, from 38 million passengers. This upgrade of the airport infrastructure will assist in accommodating the high number of visitors involved in the World Cup.

The major airport in Casablanca will receive special coverage in this airport infrastructure project. In May, Morocco also issued requests to construct a new terminal. The new facility will increase passenger capacity in the busiest airport in the country by 20 million passengers.

The investment in infrastructure at the airport is timely. In 2024, Morocco received a record 17.4 million visitors, up 20 percent on the previous year. The government projects this figure to be 26 million tourists in 2030, thus the need to expand the airport infrastructure so that it can accommodate more traffic.
