Saudi arabia Saudi arabiaSaudi Arabia’s King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Center (KSrelief) said on Tuesday that it will perform a surgery to separate Yemeni conjoined twins from the Aden governorate on Thursday.

The operation, which comes after directives from King Salman, will be held at King Abdullah Specialist Children’s Hospital in King Abdulaziz Medical City at the Ministry of National Guard in Riyadh, the capital of Saudi Arabia. Reportedly, the twins are female. According to media reports, conjoined twins are identical twins joined in utero. A very rare phenomenon, the occurrence is estimated to range from 1 in 49,000 births to 1 in 189,000 births.

The operation to separate the twins is expected to take around 11 hours. Dr. Abdullah Al-Rabeeah, the general supervisor of KSrelief and head of the medical and surgical team, said the operation to separate the twins, Mawaddah and Rahmah, will involve 6 stages, 28 doctors and specialists, along with technicians and nurses.

The Dr revealed that the twins were born conjoined to the lower chest and abdomen. After examining the reports, the doctors suspect that the twins are attached by a heart membrane.

Dr Al-Rabeeah thanked King Salman and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman for providing great support to the medical team and the healthcare sector in the country.

Separation of Yemeni conjoined twins

Saudi Arabia often performs surgeries to separate conjoined twins from Yemen. Earlier in May, doctors in Saudi Arabia successfully separated conjoined twins from Yemen after a ‘complicated’ 15-hour operation. The twins, Yussef and Yassin, were ‘conjoined in several organs’, and around 24 doctors were involved in the operation. However, one of two conjoined twins died after a “complicated” operation.

Yemen has been wracked by a seven-year conflict pitting the Saudi-backed government against Iran-backed Houthis. KSrelief regularly provides its humanitarian assistance to Yemen.
