Ethiopia

Ethiopia EthiopiaAn airstrike took place in the northern region of Tigray in Ethiopia on Monday. It wounded dozens of people including women. The United Nations (UN) said it had been unable to confirm the reports or the number of casualties because of the lack of communications in the northern region of Tigray.

Ethiopian government spokesperson Legesse Tulu did not respond to a request for comment on the recent airstrike. The clashes on the ground between the Ethiopian military and the Tigrayans stopped temporarily. However, airstrikes against rebel positions have continued in the country.

Last Friday, another airstrike took place in a camp for displaced people in a different location in Tigray. The US (United States) President Joe Biden had made the announcement recently over human rights violations in the Tigray region of Ethiopia. He raised concerns about the suffering caused by air strikes.

Earlier, a war was started in 2020 in Ethiopia between the Tigrayans and the federal government led by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed. The 2020 conflict between the government and the Tigrayans was a result of months of disagreements. The war led to a serious human rights crisis in Ethiopia.

The conflict started a year ago in Ethiopia. However, international concern over human rights abuses increased recently. Reportedly, crimes like mass killings of citizens and widespread sexual violence against women have increased recently. Many people have been displaced in the conflict.

Reportedly, the UN warned that the northern region is in urgent need of humanitarian assistance, including medical supplies. In a separate development, the government last Friday freed some jailed opposition leaders. According to Reuters, the government has previously denied targeting civilians during the conflict. The government said that they targeted those Tigrayans who fought against the government in 2020.
