Syrian government steps up attack against Islamist enclave in Idlib

Syria SyriaThe Syrian government is closely monitoring the work of the military force of Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) in Idlib. The Syrian government continues to reinforce that HTS is a terrorist organisation that must be eliminated from the country. The HTS is the de facto ruling authority in Idlib.

Recently, the government forces and Russia escalated their attacks against the areas of northwestern Syria over the past few days. It affected the city of Idlib. Many civilians were killed because of the attack. Idlib’s sole water station was out of service after a Russian airstrike targeted it on January 2.

In 2018, the United States (US) called HTS a terror organisation. The group was previously known as Jabhat al-Nusra. The group began as an Al-Qaeda affiliate. The group is also designated by the UN (United Nations) Security Council as a terrorist group.

Syrian government against HTS

In late 2021, government forces started a new war against HTS. According to the government, a group affiliated with HTS claimed responsibility for a series of bombings in several parts of Damascus in the last three years. Reportedly, after the Damascus bombings, government shells landed in northern Syria, killing at least 10 people.

Reportedly, on December 25, the Syrian News Channel conducted interviews with members of the terror group who said they had received instructions from HTS’s leaders in Idlib for attacks. The channel took interviews of Tariq Zaki al-Saadi, Muhammad Ayman Omar Erslan, Youssef Muhammad al-Khamis, Abdallah Muhammad Arfan al-Masalkhi, Mahmoud Nazhat Nazhat and Omar Fahd Nazhat.

According to the group members, the leaders of the group gave them instructions to carry out the attacks in northern Syria. The government broadcasted these confessions of the members. By broadcasting these confessions, the government accused HTS of terrorism. The government said to eliminate the group. The Syrian government’s decade-long conflict with insurgents continues in parts of the country.
