EXCLUSIVE: Daesh threatens Tunisia, Kais Saied responds

The latest issue of Al-Naba, one of the many publications of the self-styled Islamic State, is almost entirely dedicated to events in Tunisia. According to Daesh, the Muslim Brotherhood movement, represented by the Ennahda party, is now paying the price of compromising with the concept of democracy. The author deduces that the only way possible is that proposed by ISIS, based on embracing jihad and sharia. That is a clear call for violence in the North African country after Ennahda has lost all credibility and hope of returning to power.
After the threats, the response of the President of the Tunisian Republic, Kais Saied, was not long in coming, who yesterday, Wednesday 4 August, visited the headquarters of the Specialized Unit of the National Guard in Beer Borqba. The presidency said the visit was a live event. The head of state greeted the determination and patriotism of the Special Unit, inviting the military to continue to be vigilant in defending the country and the Tunisian people.
“We are not bored, and we are not afraid, as long as we are right, we are not afraid of the accusations of the guilty,” Saied said, adding: “I came without an appointment to inform the Tunisian people that our children’s forces protect them and their homeland. You will always remain an impenetrable bulwark against the enemies of the fatherland.”
Rumors not yet confirmed are hypothesizing in these hours that 1500 members of Daesh (ISIS) would have entered Tunisian territory in the previous months, presumably from Libya. However, it is not clear whether this information circulated in the local media is part of the propaganda of the Islamists to scare the President and public opinion. Still, the fact that border security has been strengthened. Egypt and Algeria are also following events in the neighboring country with interest. Both countries have expressed full support for the choices of the President and the Tunisian people, increasing the exchange of sensitive information to prevent any threats to the security and stability of the region.
Repeated suicide attacks against Tunisian security forces were carried out in Tunis, for example, in March 2020 near the US embassy and in June 2019 and October 2018. The attacks resulted in some deaths and several injuries, including civilized people. Tunisian authorities have taken a series of measures to dismantle the terrorist cells. Operations by security forces against terrorist organizations regularly occur in the governorates of Kasserine, Le Kef, Jendouba, Béja, and Sidi Bouzid.
The precarious security situation in Libya also has repercussions on the Tunisian border areas, especially after Turkey, a sponsor country of terrorism in Africa, took control of the Al-Watiya military base, just 40 km from the Ras Jadir border. In recent months, thousands of Turkmen and Syrian mercenaries and fighters had been transferred here, with the risk of joining the most radical Libyan armed militias. The special forces and the Tunisian army have often had to militarily face the terrorists infiltrated from Libya with violent armed clashes.
