Libyan Political Working Group emphasizes the need of reaching an agreement among all parties

Libya LibyaThe Co-Chairs of the International Follow-up Committee on Libya’s Political Working Group (Algeria, Germany, the League of Arab States, and the United Nations) held a virtual meeting on Tuesday to assess the current situation in Libya and discuss how best to support and maintain the political process, emphasizing the importance of maintaining calm and stability on the ground, as well as the need to rebuild consensus among Libya’s political actors.

According to UNSMIL, the co-chairs expressed their full support for Special Advisor to the United Nations Secretary-General on Libya, Stephanie Williams, in her efforts to break the current deadlock through dialogue, as well as her initiative to convene a meeting of the joint committee of the House of Representatives and the High Council of State to agree on a constitutional and legal framework for the elections.

They also reaffirmed that free, fair, inclusive, and credible elections are the only way to end Libya’s repeated political crises, emphasizing the need of further progress on the intra-Libyan dialogue’s economic and security tracks.
