Saudi Al Baik looks for sales in Qatar

Long lines of people anxiously wait to enjoy delicious fried chicken from a well-known Saudi Arabian fast food business in a dusty, bleak location outside a metro station in Doha.

Al Baik arrived with four food trucks and set up business behind the Messila metro station in the city in preparation for the World Cup 2022 in Qatar.

The menu is small, but the lines are long. The wait for their renowned broasted chicken and a side of fries is 20 minutes from the time you arrive at the counter where you can make your order.

Broasted? That chicken has been well-seasoned with unidentified spices, battered, and pressure-fried, keeping the liquid nicely in place.

The clients are content despite the limited selection, and their enthusiasm only grows as they approach the pick-up counters.

There is a celebratory vibe. Despite the presence of traffic wardens to keep order and cones to make sure everyone remains in line, people are singing songs and waving flags. The security officers warn people waiting that it will be worth it because of the food to be patient.

Since Al Baik aired videos of their food trucks departing for Qatar before the biggest international football event, which begins on Sunday, there has been a lot of expectation.

Residents were unable to wait for the trucks to come so they could open for business and find a good parking spot, which is never easy in Qatar.

Those who had eaten in Saudi Arabia, particularly during the Hajj and Umrah pilgrimages, were even more hungry. The Hajj only occurs once a year, however the Umrah to the two holiest sites in Islam can be performed at any time of the year in the towns of Mecca and Medina.

Others were looking forward to something new to savour and anticipate because they had never had Al Baik’s food but had only heard about the hoopla from friends and coworkers.
