UN Warns of ‘Irreversible Consequences’ as Gaza Violence Escalates
Two senior advisers of the UN have raised serious concerns over the violence in Gaza after deadly airstrikes carried out by Israel. They warned that the situation could soon get out of control and cause damage that cannot be undone.
Virginia Gamba, the Acting Special Adviser on the UN on the Prevention of Genocide, and Mo Bleeker, the Special Adviser on the Responsibility to Protect, have called on all sides to protect innocent civilians. They have urged everyone involved to calm down and stop the violence immediately to avoid more deaths.
The airstrikes which started on March 18, are the first major attacks since a ceasefire was agreed two months ago. Reports suggest hundreds of people have died, and many others are injured.
UN advisers said the violence is increasing dangerously and this could have permanent effects. This can badly impact the peace of the region.
The situation of Gaza is getting worse. Earlier this month, Israel stopped aid supplies from entering Gaza. This has made the humanitarian crisis even more serious. Many international groups, including the UN, have criticized this move. They warned that blocking aid could lead to starvation and even more suffering for the people living there.
The advisers also said that a strong political solution is the only way to end the conflict. They supported the UN Secretary-General’s statement, where he expressed shock over the situation. They called for a ceasefire.
