Why Was Greta Thunberg Detained During Gaza War Protest in Copenhagen

Students, including environmental activist Greta Thunberg, were arrested during a pro-Palestinian demonstration in Copenhagen. They were detained at the University of Copenhagen’s administration building.
Thunberg shared the updates on her Instagram, saying the police violently entered the university building with ram wearing assault rifles. The protests come amid the ongoing war in Gaza where children and women continue to be killed in Israeli bombings. Israel continues its war as a right to self defense against the militant group Hamas.
Students Against the Occupation highlighted concerns about Palestine and its civilians. It said the situation only gets worse and rebuked the University of Copenhagen for continued cooperation with academic institutions in Israel. The activists said they only occupied the central administration to demand ‘academic boycott now’.
Greta Thunberg Stands in Solidarity with Palestine
Thunberg, 21, had also put the spotlight on Palestine in December 2023 through an op-ed. She and her colleagues their ‘Fridays for Future’ movement has always been political as it has always been about justice. The activists believe that advocating for climate justice comes from a place of caring about people and their human rights.
Thunberg said they will continue to speak up for people who are suffering, forced to flee their homes, and are killed. She highlighted that they have done the same activism for Kurdistan, Ukraine and other places struck by war.
The group also called out Israel’s ongoing war crimes in Gaza, and genocide in the name of defense. The activists said it cannot be denied that Palestinians have been living under suppression and occupation for decades, and now are being continuously bombed.
