June has arrived, which marks the beginning of ‘Pride Month’ or Pride Month. This holiday is held to celebrate the self-affirmation and visibility of people who belong to the LGBTQ+ community. Also, raise awareness about the fight for equality and dignity of lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, intersex, queer and asexual people.
This month-long celebration was dubbed “Pride” to celebrate and strengthen the LGBTQ+ rights movements. That is why here we tell you how the ‘Pride Month’ came about.
Why Is Pride Month Celebrated In June In The US?
As is the case with other commemorations, Pride Month began with a protest, which, on June 28, 1969, marked the start of the Stonewall riots in New York. The queer community responded to a police raid that began at the Stonewall Inn, a bar located in the Greenwich neighborhood of Manhattan. This establishment served as a refuge for the city’s LGBT community.
In that year, the raid by the police was common, since, for that year, acts of homosexuality were considered illegal in almost all states of the country. However, that night, members of the LGBTQ community decided to fight back to defend their rights.

Since the Stonewall protest took place on June 28, this date was established as International LGBT Pride Day and, therefore, June became Pride Month. A year later, on June 28, the first anniversary of the Stonewall riots, the first Pride parade was held, in which activists from New York organized the Christopher Street Liberation March, which traveled 51 blocks. to Central Park.
That same day, similar demonstrations were also organized in other cities of the country such as Los Angeles, San Francisco, Boston and Chicago, which continue to this day.
What Is The Meaning Of The Rainbow Flag?
In addition to the marches that began to take place each year, the use of the rainbow flag as a symbol of the LGBTQ community became popular. Gilbert Baker, an artist from San Francisco, created the flag in 1978.
All the colors of the flag have a meaning. Hot pink, before it was removed, meant sex, red means life, orange means healing, yellow means sunlight, green means nature, blue means serenity, and violet means spirit.
