Russia Wants to Create Greater Eurasian Space With China

Acknowledging China’s successful Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), Russian President Vladimir Putin described it as a top-level design. He said BRI brings together the efforts of various countries for the common goal of development.

Russia is willing to work with China to promote its implementation. Putin pointed out that some people see the BRI as an attempt by China to control others. He said Russia’s vision of developing the Eurasian Economic Union is fully compatible with the Belt and Road Initiative.

“We believe in merging our vision of creating a Greater Eurasian space with the idea of our Chinese friends as part of the Belt and Road Initiative, and we have been quite good at synchronizing our efforts.”

Putin Applauds China’s Belt and Road Initiative

The Russian president applauded China’s ambitious project, saying it’s a platform for international cooperation. He said the main advantage of the cooperation concept proposed by China is that within the framework of cooperation. “No one imposes anything on others. This is the difference between President Xi Jinping’s Belt and Road Initiative and other projects pursued by countries with a colonialist flavor.”

Putin said various projects undertaken for realization of common goal under the BRI framework are done in a way that is acceptable to all parties. China has recorded applications from 115 BRI countries in the past 10 years. Most of the applications are from South Korea (178,000), Italy (24,000), Singapore (15,000), Austria (11,000), and Luxembourg (3,000)

Moreover, China has seen a surge in patent applications. The China National Intellectual Property Administration said the number in 2022 was 29,000 compared to 18,000 in 2013. The patent applications are related to technologies, like semiconductors, computer technology, and digital communications.

Beijing is also using the Belt and Road Initiative as a diplomacy tool. China touts the BRI as a global infrastructure and investment scheme as an alternative development model for developing countries. President Xi Jinping says China is a reliable and trusted partner to the developing world.

William Jones, Washington Bureau Chief for the Executive Intelligence Review, said the creation of the BRI 10 years ago, the Global Development Initiative proposed in 2021, and the Global Security Initiative proposed in the same year all reinvigorated a new sense of development. “China’s willingness to share its development with other developing countries also provided an alternative to the neglect by the Western nations of their development needs.”

Through BRI, China has empowered developing countries with roads, railroads, airports, and power plants, etc.
