The new clue from 2013 that offers hope in the search for Austin Tice relates to his escape from captivity. In early 2013, Tice who had been held in a Syrian prison for over five months managed to slip out of his cell in Damascus. After his escape, he was seen wandering the streets of the upscale Mazzeh neighborhood dressed in ragged clothing looking for help. This sighting was the first public confirmation of Tice’s survival since he was taken captive in August 2012.
Tice entered the home of a well-known Syrian family before being recaptured shortly after. This event is significant as it provides strong evidence that Tice was held by forces loyal to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad which has helped the U.S. government in its efforts to pressure the Assad regime for information. Although Tice was recaptured, this 2013 clue has remained a vital part of the ongoing investigation into his disappearance fueling hope that he is still alive.
