Syrian Aid Halted World Embraces For Worst Humanitarian Disaster

Syrian Aid

Syria SyriaHuman catastrophe of famine and malnutrition seems to be on the horizon, as aid supply mandate for Syria expired on July 10, under veto power of Russia. Despite repeated attempts the thing has happened. Ireland and Norway are still trying to get a way through so that the more than 4,600 aid trucks that used to pass can continue to do so.

Many of these trucks only carried food, have passed through the Bab al-Hawa crossing on the Syria-Turkey border till July 2021, according to the UN’s Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA).

According to U.N. aid chief Martin Griffiths, this was a ‘lifeline aid’ for the people of Syria providing food, shelter and medicines. If this stops, there is nothing but death and misery to be seen for an economy that has not supported its own economy.

After Russia vetoed the one-year extension, it fell short to get majority vote for a six-month extension for the country to arrange itself and get it going without outside funding.

This latter decision was vetoed by all other members of the group; so, there wasn’t the 15-member majority with only China and Russia being in favor of the 6-month extension.

The United States, Britain and France have said a six-month extension is not long enough for aid groups to plan and operate effectively. U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, Linda Thomas-Greenfield, spoke to aid groups on Sunday, who told her that without the U.N. operation 70% of food needs would go unmet.”

“An entire generation is at risk,” she posted on Twitter. “The NGOs (aid groups) asked the UNSC to continue fighting to save these lives … We have been working all weekend with the UNSC to find compromise.”
