Macron Pushes Cabinet Reshuffle Post Borne Taking Over As PM In Coalition Government

Macron

France FranceIt has been a disappointing turn of events for Macron. As he nurses the hurt of losing in the elections to the second term, the reshuffle of the cabinet is in order. Emmanuel Macron handed over the running of the show to Elisabeth Borne who will now be running a coalition government.

Three out of the 15 ministers in Macron’s parliament have failed to be re-elected. It was two-round vote which couldn’t prevent the defeat last week. Those leaving the stage includes the environment minister, in charge of health and secretary of state for the sea. Those who have come in action include, Christophe Bechu, Francois Braun and Herve Berville respectively.

In addition, Damien Abad, the minister of policies for the disabled who is under investigation for rape and sexual misconduct, has been replaced by Jean-Christophe Combe, former director general of the French Red Cross.

The new cabinet is expected to hold its first meeting in a week from June 03. Abad’s name seemed to have been marred in the right time as he was exiting the stage where stands Ms. Borne to change history as the first ever woman in France to be elected as a PM.

The allegations were particularly embarrassing for the new prime minister and the president, who both claim to be champions of women’s rights and have pledged “zero tolerance” for sexual misconduct.

Women seem to be ruling the roost everywhere. For example, last week itself, the National Assembly elected another Macron loyalist, Yael Braun-Pivet, as the new speaker – the first woman to hold the post. She was elected after her predecessor lost his seat in the parliament at the election.

Macron still has the ability to rule as he has won majority seats in the National Assembly, but he will have to now cajole his way through legislatures. To prevent the deadlock, Macron’s Renaissance party and allies may try to negotiate on a case-by-case basis with lawmakers from the center-left and from the conservative party.
