Yemen YemenControlling the spread of Houthis, Yemeni fighters have occupied full control over the energy-rich Shabwa province after continuously fighting with the Houthi rebels. The group that managed to win over the Houthis were Yemen’s Giants Brigade. The brigade is allegedly backed by a Saudi-led coalition fighting the Iran-aligned Houthis and they made the announcement of them winning against the Houthis on Monday.

Since the beginning of the year, the infighting has been going on and only after the coalition sent reinforcements to Shabwa there was some improvement in the region. It was in a horrific state after the Houthi in roads took access to the Saudi-backed government’s last northern stronghold in Marib.

The focus of the whole war is on Marib, in Central Yemen, and since over a year, the whole province has been battling life. The only relief with them is the United Nations-led peace efforts. The government has a strong hold over the city especially because of the access towards nearby oil and gas infrastructure. The city is a crucial city for the country especially given the functional environment. It is home to 3 million people, including nearly 1 million who fled other parts of the nation especially after Houthis took over Sanaa in the later stages of 2014.

As per reports, the push to occupy Shabwa came as heavy air strikes carried by the Saudi-led coalition as they fought Houthis elsewhere in Yemen. Even the capital city experienced fighting among the two sides. With this, the rebels have also managed to step up cross-border attacks which include the use of ballistic missiles to target the kingdom.
