On Tuesday, US President Donald Trump made global headlines again as he announced an immigration option aimed at rich foreigners. It is the ‘Gold Card‘ – meant to offer a route to US citizenship for a fee of $5 million.
This latest option is expected to replace the current EB-5 Visa program. Established in 1990, the existing option lets foreigners get access to US residency if they create or preserve jobs through capital investments. But the program has been criticised.
Donald Trump highlighted that the ‘Gold Card’ option is going to offer the privileges of Green Card and is going to be a path to obtaining the US citizenship. Further details about the scheme can be expected in the near future.
Trump’s Commerce Secretary recently described the EB-5 Visa program as “non sense” and “fraud”. The Gold Card scheme is expected to generate significant revenue and help address the national debt. Trump suggested selling 1 million gold cards, predicting strong interest.
