Hezbollah leader ready for all options to protect Lebanon’s oil and gas
Lebanon–While warning Israel against making miscalculations toward Lebanon, Hezbollah leader Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah said that his party is ready to do everything to protect Lebanon’s oil and gas.
Hezbollah leader said on Tuesday in a televised speech commemorating the Shia holy day of Ashura that the Lebanese party is prepared for military actions, and will spare no efforts to protect Lebanon on the issues of oil, gas, and maritime disputes. He reportedly said, “We are very serious in our fight for Lebanon’s wealth. We should be ready for all options in response to Israeli threats.” He went on to warn Israel not to commit any error with Lebanon and its people.
Hezbollah is an Iran-backed group in Lebanon that has a well-armed militia. Recently, the Israeli military shot down three Hezbollah unarmed drones flying over Karish gas field in the Mediterranean Sea. Subsequently, Nasrallah said that his group can locate and strike Karish and any other Israeli gas field. Israel reportedly considers the Hezbollah group its most serious immediate threat.
Meanwhile, Lebanon is trying to reach a solution with Israel to end a dispute over maritime borders. The tension between both countries escalated further after the arrival of the Israeli-contracted Energean Power vessel on the maritime border between Israel and Lebanon on 5 June. Lebanon claimed that the Karish gas field was disputed territory under ongoing maritime border negotiations, whereas Israel claimed the territory lies within its internationally recognised economic waters. Israel reportedly wants to secure the Karish gas field and resolve the maritime dispute.
Recently, Amos Hochstein, a senior adviser for energy security at the U.S. State Department, who has been mediating between the two neighbors, said that the two counties can reach a solution soon. In August, he met with Lebanon’s president, caretaker prime minister and parliament speaker.
